"Could fulfilment ever be felt as deeply as loss?"

While reading Inheritance of Loss a novel by Kiran Desia; I came across a beautiful sentence;

"Could fulfilment ever be felt as deeply as loss?"

Well the answer is of course no by most of us but whats the reason behind this, I think this picture can exxplain it a bit;
