Ashish Nandy controversy : Selective reporting?

Ashish Nandy is considered as one of the most influential intellectual but still his statements were a bit annoying when I first read it. In fact everyone had this doubt in the mind "why such an elite intellectual human being would make such a low statement?" But as we go deeper into the matter, the context of his words are clearly pointing in a completely different way.
His statement goes like this
'It will be an undignified and vulgar statement but the fact is that most of the corrupt come from the OBCs, Scheduled Castes and now increasingly the Scheduled Tribes. As long as this exists, I still have hope for our republic.”
The first part of statement when considered in isolation is extremely derogatory, but the second part just tells the other obvious. Ashish Nandy had argued before that backward people are exposed more because of their inability to hide the illicit transactions, unlike upper class ones who do it cleverly and with utmost elegance using their social connections. And he has also argued that corruption by backward classes ultimately points to their social uplifting. Though many might not agree with it but it is a point well made out. Considering his stand on this issue and the context of the above words, there might not seem to be any bashing against any community. The sociologists seem to get into core of the issue and taking an isolated statement and reporting it might give altogether a complete different meaning.
